M. Nasir Uddin (Kalapara, Patuakhali):
The upazila administration has launched an eviction drive to remove illegal structures built on government canals in the Chingoria and Rahmatpur areas of Kalapara Municipality in Patuakhali. The long-occupied canals had been encroached upon with unauthorized houses and shops, severely disrupting water flow and causing extensive waterlogging.
Under the Local Government (Municipality) Act, 2009, prior seven-day eviction notices were issued to the occupiers. As they failed to vacate the premises within the deadline, the eviction drive was jointly conducted by the upazila administration and municipal authorities at 11 a.m. on Sunday (May 11, 2025).
The operation was led by Md. Robiul Islam, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), who is also serving as the acting Administrator of Kalapara Municipality. The drive was attended by an executive magistrate, Assistant Commissioner (Land), law enforcement personnel, municipal officials, social activists, journalists, and conscious local citizens.
Environmental Imbalance and Health Hazards Prompt Action
Local residents reported that the long-term occupation of the canals had severely hindered drainage, resulting in stagnant water and widespread waterlogging. The consequences included a surge in mosquitoes and flies, an unbearable stench, and the outbreak of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and skin infections, especially among children and the elderly. The ecological balance of the area was also under threat.

Firm Statement from the UNO
In a statement regarding the operation, Md. Robiul Islam said:
“We will not compromise when it comes to protecting government property and ensuring proper drainage in the municipality. Canal encroachment has already caused serious harm to the environment and public health. We want the people of Kalapara to live in a safe and comfortable environment. That is why these eviction drives against illegal occupation will continue.”
Public Applause for Administrative Courage
The firm and timely intervention sparked a wave of positive response among the residents of Kalapara. Citizens from all walks of life have expressed their appreciation on social media for the courageous and effective leadership of UNO Md. Robiul Islam. Many noted that thanks to his uncompromising stance and bold administrative steps, the canals are finally being freed from illegal occupation.
For his strong leadership and effective administrative action, UNO and Municipal Administrator Md. Robiul Islam is now receiving widespread praise from the people of Kalapara.
